Professional and personal life update: I’m living a real life “King of Queens.” This is a good thing. That sitcom is one of my favorites, especially now that I can identify with the premise.
I work as an assistant (see previous posts for my glorification of this line of work), and I’ve become good friends with another assistant. She introduced my to her son a few months ago, and we started dating shortly thereafter. What’s funny is he works for UPS, so the dynamic of our work background mirrors that of Carrie and Doug Heffernan.
As I watch reruns, I can’t help but smile at the parallels between the characters and my own situation. Doug is a down-to-earth, no-frills type of guy who cherishes family ties, decades-long friendships, watching sports, and gambling. My Vince harbors the same tendencies. Carrie, like me, is a bit of a loner, gets excited by retail bargains, and keeps a tenuous relationship with an eccentric father (mine doesn’t live in the basement, but he just might end up in one, if I ever buy a house and decide to have him live with me). Vince and I have yet to entangle ourselves in situations like the outlandish schemes Doug devises to sneak non-nutritious food or evade trips to the opera, but I do find myself already doling out a fair amount of sass and eye-rolling.
Given the simple nature of this show’s premise, I will make this post short and sweet. That isn’t to suggest a lack of depth in my new relationship. I’m looking forward to deepening my connection with him, but for now, I’m just enjoying the lack of drama and the hundreds of ways my UPS boy makes me laugh.
